The partners of Stand Up for Europe! have produced a two-volume “Manual on how to counter anti-democratic slogans”.

The Manual is a useful tool for proposing activities with students and young people to reflect on their values, sense of community, and above all, to learn how to manage conflict situations constructively. The proposed activities and theoretical material described are based on the German program “Training against Regular Table Slogans” (Argumentationstraining gegen Stammtischparolen) developed twenty-five years ago by Dr. Klaus-Peter Hufer and is one of the most widely used in Germany and German-speaking countries in the field of civic education.

Volume 1, “Training Manual on the Promotion of Democracy in Europe,” presents in its first part an overview of the threats to European democracy posed by populism and extremism; it describes democracy as a way of life in the sense of peaceful coexistence as our response to this challenge. The second part consists of 40 activities organized into what we call different “perspectives” to examine anti-democratic slogans in a holistic way. The volume also offers practical examples of how to organize these activities based on the time available and the perspectives you want to address.

Volume 2, “In-depth analysis of the approach to promoting democracy in Europe,” presents the theoretical material supporting the more practical Volume 1. It is useful for those who want to learn more about recent socio-political developments in some European contexts and how Prof. Dr. Klaus-Peter Hufer and the partners of the Stand Up for Europe! project have decided to respond to the challenges related to populism.
